Why We Chose the CCAF: The Claude Certification That Wins Hands Down (Even If You Don't Code)
There are free Claude certificates. There are four paid Claude certifications. The three of us looked at all of them and picked the same one: the CCAF.
That is the Claude Certified Architect – Foundations. It is a technical exam. Two of us don't write code. All three of us passed.
Here is why we chose it, who we think it is for, and the one access rule you need to know before you plan anything.
What Claude certifications are available?
Free
The free option. Anthropic Academy has free, self-paced courses with a certificate of completion at the end. Claude 101 is 13 lessons and one quiz, about 2.5 hours. If you are brand new to Claude, start there. It costs nothing and will give you a running start on learning the basics of Claude.
Proctored
Just know that a certificate of completion is different from a formal proctored certification. It says you finished a course, not that you passed a closed-book, proctored exam that really tests your understanding of the material. Earlier this year, Anthropic rolled out several proctored exams with formal certifications. Passing one shows you understand how to build production-grade systems with Claude.
How much does each Claude certification cost?
These are the formal, proctored exams from Anthropic.
| Certification | Built for | Questions | Exam fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Certified Associate – Foundations | Business users, consultants, project managers | 60 | $99 |
| Claude Certified Developer – Foundations | Developers writing code with the Claude API | 53 | $125 |
| Our pick Claude Certified Architect – Foundations (CCAF) | People who design and build production systems with Claude | 60 | $125 |
| Claude Certified Architect – Professional | Senior architects working at enterprise scale | 63 | $175 |
All four are 2 hours, closed book, and proctored online. All four need 720 out of 1,000 to pass. Each credential is valid for 12 months.
Info as of October 10, 2026. Verify current details on Anthropic's certification page.

Why is the CCAF the best Claude certification?
It proves you can build, not just use. The Associate exam shows you can use Claude well at work. The CCAF shows you understand how agentic systems are designed: agents, tools, MCP, Claude Code, structured output, context management. That is the skill companies are paying for.
It is a real technical credential. "Foundations" is misleading. People we know who have taken all four call this one the hardest. When a non-technical person holds it, it says something.
It comes from the source. Anthropic is arguably the leading company in agentic AI. Claude Code, MCP, and the Agent SDK are the tools a lot of real business automation is built on. This exam tests exactly those.
It is the one people recognize. The CCAF was Anthropic's first certification, and it is the one people search for. You will also see it written as CCA-F and CCAR-F. Same exam.
The studying makes you better at the work. All three of us build faster and with more confidence now. That would have been worth it without the badge.

Credential earned by our founders. Not an endorsement by Anthropic.
Who should take the CCAF, and how can it help you?
We see four kinds of people in our study group.
The future AI consultant. You want to walk into a company, map out the bottlenecks, and build the solutions that fix them. The CCAF gives you the architecture knowledge to do it right and a credential to show the client before they hire you.
The career builder. You want a strong technical certification on your resume from the company leading in agentic AI. Few non-technical candidates have one. That is the point.
The employee who wants to be the AI go-to. Every company has someone people turn to with AI questions. The CCAF gives you the credibility to be that person, and the knowledge to back it up when leadership asks what to build.
The manager or business owner. You want your managers and department heads to find the wasted hours and fix them. Put them through CCAF prep and they come back able to spot where AI fits, scope it, and lead the build. That shows up in efficiency and revenue.
How does the CCAF exam work?
- 60 questions in 2 hours. Closed book. No Claude during the exam.
- You get 4 scenarios, picked at random from a pool of 6. About 15 questions each.
- Scored on a scale of 100 to 1,000. You need 720 to pass.
- It is proctored, currently through Pearson VUE. You can take it at home or at one of their test centers.
What topics are on the CCAF exam?
The questions cover five domains:
| Domain | Share of exam |
|---|---|
| Agentic Architecture & Orchestration | |
| Claude Code Configuration & Workflows | |
| Prompt Engineering & Structured Output | |
| Tool Design & MCP Integration | |
| Context Management & Reliability |
From our group
A tip from our group: scheduling online is easy, but some of us hit technical issues taking the proctored exam at home. Test your computer, camera, and internet ahead of time. If your setup is shaky, or you don't perform well under stress when something goes wrong, book a test center instead.
What are the six CCAF exam scenarios?
- Customer Support Resolution Agent
- Code Generation with Claude Code
- Multi-Agent Research System
- Structured Data Extraction
- Developer Productivity with Claude
- Claude Code for Continuous Integration
Every question drops you into a situation where something is broken or badly designed. You pick the best fix. Four answers look right. A couple might be technically right. Only one is better than the others. That is why you need to know the exam guide like the back of your hand.
The exam does not ask you to write code. It asks you to understand how these systems fit together and why one design beats another.
That can be learned.

How do you get access to the CCAF exam?
Know before you plan
One thing to know before you plan: as of October 10, 2026, Anthropic offers the CCAF through companies and organizations enrolled in the Claude Partner Network (CPN). Access comes through a partner organization. You cannot schedule the exam as an individual. It is unknown when, or if, this will change.
Shift Smart AI is Certified in the Claude Partner Network, and we are growing our bench of qualified people. If you choose to apply to test through Shift Smart AI, you can join a group of professionals who share in CPN benefits while keeping your own practice and your own clients. You get the network and keep your flexibility.
What does it take for non-techies to pass the CCAF?
It started in May with one small post. Anita had just been notified that Shift Smart AI was accepted into the process to join the Claude Partner Network. She posted in a Women in AI group, looking for a few study colleagues to keep her focused and meet the requirements to obtain CPN status.
She had no idea how much demand was out there for this certification. Before she knew it, a new Skool group of 25 people was underway. From Brazil to Australia, Taiwan to the US, a global group had formed.
Then it happened fast. In just 45 days, study pods formed with Alice and Shin taking the lead. We created claudestudycards.com to help our group nail down the fundamentals, because most of us couldn't grasp the materials Anthropic provided. And we held intensive exam prep sessions for everyone enrolled to test.
13 of our founding members sat the CCAF and passed between September and early October. Most of them are non-technical.

Five things made the difference:
Structure and accountability. Most of us run thriving businesses or hold day jobs. A structured study group gave us deadlines, a purpose, and people who noticed when we went quiet.
Community. We had like-minded people to ask questions and study with, in small pods and on Skool. Nobody got stuck alone.
Knowing what to ignore. A lot of the popular prep content is not on the exam.
Plain-English translation. Every technical concept has a simple version. Somebody just has to say it.
Scenario practice. Memorizing facts is not enough. The exam is scenario based with many distractors. You have to know how to test in this environment, tear down each question, and practice choosing between two answers that both sound right. Anita couldn't find resources that explained the core concepts in simple language, so she built her own with Claude Code: claudestudycards.com. As the pilot group came to rely on the flashcards, we added practice exams that model the real exam, wordy questions and distractors included.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pass the CCAF without a coding background?
Two of us did, and so did most of the 13 founding members who passed. The exam does not ask you to write code. It tests whether you understand how agentic systems fit together and why one design beats another.
Can I pass the CCAF with the free materials available online?
Yes, but it is challenging, especially if you are non-technical and have little hands-on experience with Claude products like Claude Code. Many of us found Anthropic's materials hard to digest without a technical background. Our study materials were built by people who have passed the exam, and they work: 13 of our founding members have passed since September. Our live sessions and intensive study sessions give you accountability and move you toward exam day in the shortest time possible. And you are not studying alone. You join a Skool community of like-minded people who study together, ask questions, and get help.
How much does the Claude certification cost?
The CCAF exam fee is $125. The other three paid certifications range from $99 to $175. There is also a free certificate of completion through Anthropic Academy, but it is not a proctored certification.
Is there a free Claude certification?
Anthropic Academy's free courses, like Claude 101, end with a certificate of completion. That shows you finished a course. The four formal certifications are paid, proctored exams.
How hard is the CCAF?
It is a technical exam with scenario questions where more than one answer can look right. You need 720 out of 1,000 to pass. Structured study and scenario practice made the difference for our group.
How do I get access to the CCAF exam?
As of October 10, 2026, access comes through organizations in the Claude Partner Network. You cannot schedule it as an individual. Shift Smart AI is Certified in the Claude Partner Network, and you can apply to test through us.
